How You Can Help Save Lives
There are many ways you can help Fresh Start Rescue save the lives of cats and dogs across Queensland, and you don't need a lot of time or money to make a difference. Below are a number of ways you can help us, but if you have other skills / ideas we would love to hear from you!
Become a
Foster Carer
Our success is entirely dependant on having a network of fantastic foster carers. Every foster home enables us to save a pet from being euthanised, mistreated or abandoned. Being a foster carer is also a great way to have a pet without the expense and long term commitment of owning one.
All you need to become a foster carer is a loving and secure home environment, time for cuddles and most of all, a kind heart. Fresh Start Rescue pays for all veterinary expenses and screens potential adopters.

Make a Monetary Donation
We have a great need for monetary donations. Our vet bills are thousands of dollars each month for desexing, vaccination, medications and other necessary care for our dogs and cats.
Any amount you can afford, no matter how small will be greatly appreciated. Donations over $2 are tax deductable and a donation of $1 a month can make a real difference.
You can send a cheque, make an online payment or even set up a regular donation to help us fund our ongoing rescue work.

Goods
We are always in need of basic animal care necessities such as good quality pet food, flea and worming treatments, leads and collars, toys, crates and carriers, etc. If you see any of these items on sale, please consider purchasing some to donate to us. By receiving these items as donations we can instead use our very limited funds on vet bills and fees related to rescuing animals.
Maybe you have a garage full of odds and ends that you don't have a use for any more? Baby gates and playpens can be very handy for carers looking after dogs and puppies. Pre-loved dog crates or cat carriers are invaluable to us. Old couches and sofas make sumptuous dog beds especially for larger breeds. If you have a donation, please send us an email.
Volunteer Time
and Talent
Can't foster? There are still many things you can do to help us and even the smallest task makes a big difference. Here are just a few ideas (you may have a great idea of your own!):

If you have a car and some spare time, we are often in need of volunteers to transport dogs to and from vet appointments, deliver supplies to carers and collect animals from pounds and shelters across Queensland.

Own an animal related business like Grooming or Dog Training? A bath and clip can make an abandoned, matted dog feel brand new! And a day of socialising and professional help can be a very enriching experience.

If you are crafty, you could try your hand at making coats, toys or blankets, etc. for our rescue dogs and cats. A little something special for a animal who has had nothing can bring such joy to their world.

We hope to hold fundraising BBQs on a regular basis across Brisbane but need volunteers. If you are interested in helping at a fundraising event, or have an idea on how we can raise money, please get in touch with us.
Spread the
Word
As a small rescue group, we can't afford paid advertising so we depend on word of mouth, social media and the internet to spread the word about Fresh Start Rescue.
The simplest way you can help us spread the word is to jump on our Facebook page and "like", share and comment on our posts. It may not seem like much, but this can help us rehome pets and find new carers to continue our work.
We also now have a number of new posters that you can print off and display in your community - at your workplace, local noticeboard, veterinary practice, library, church, the dog park...anywhere you can!
Be a Responsible
Owner
Ultimately the best way to help us and other animal rescue groups is to be a responsible pet owner.

Desex your dog and cat - It is the most crucial way you can prevent animals ending up in pounds. Desexing your pet also has health benefits so there is really no good reason not to get them snipped!

Please do not become a "backyard breeder". Puppies and kittens are cute but it's a sad reality that some probably will end up in need of rescue at some stage of their lives. Pets should be companions and friends, not be used for monetary gain.

Please take steps to ensure your pet doesn't wind up unclaimed at the pound. Make sure you pet has a collar with ID tag that clearly states your primary contact number. Pets should also be microchipped and registered with your local council. Keep these details up to date if you move or change your phone number.

Never buy anything from a pet shop that sell puppies and kittens. Stop these businesses from supporting and encouraging the over-breeding and mistreatment of animals.
